The future of travelling by air

February 16th, 2012

It cannot be denied that air travel is of fundamental importance to society today; but it also cannot be ignored that it is no fun to fly. When you take into account the delays, the long waits, the heavy luggage, the lack of room for your legs, and the jet lag, there seems to be little room for enjoyment. Even when things run smoothly, the most positive remarks regarding people’s flights are ‘it wasn’t too bad’.

If we take into consideration the global impact as well, the cost to the environment is too high. In times like these we often look to the future to comfort ourselves with the fact that things can only get better, both in terms of social policy and technological advancements. Southwest Airlines, however, has recently made an announcement that will only spread doubt about such optimism.

They have said that, in order to cut costs and to make their flying greener, they will refit all of their current planes with more seats. What this means for the customer is that they will have an inch less leg room, and an inch less reclining space for their seat. The company reassure that this will actually make the journey more comfortable due to certain ergonomic changes made to the seat design, but this is hard to believe.

There is some hope, however. Finnair, the Finnish air company recently put on a big event to celebrate their 85th anniversary in which they invited professionals from all walks of life to put their heads together and paint a picture of what flying will be like in 2093. What they came up with was very optimistic and can only fill you with hope. They saw designs of sleek aircrafts that run on organic matter, giving off non harmful fumes, flying into space to take advantage of the Earth’s turning, so as to reduce flight time.

Though things may well turn out differently, it cannot be denied that there are pressures on the air travel industry that will find a manifestation in the technology. Not only is there a big push for green technology, but the economic benefits of making flying shorter and more comfortable are considerable.
